Book Review: Captor (City of Sin 1) by Jenny Lynn

Blurb:
Some people think I'm a hero. To others, I'm nothing more than a criminal. It doesn't matter. None of us deserves to be saved, we're all sinners here.

Beckett

Wealth. Power. Women. If you strip it all away, what's left of me? Just the monster; anger, vengeance, violence. Criminals stole everything that mattered from me, and I've made it my mission to make them pay.

The police are trying to catch me, organized crime bosses want me dead, every night I go out in disguise and hand out my own brand of justice - no one can stop me. But I got careless. I fucked up. I took off my mask one night, in front of a crime reporter no less, and that one mistake could be my downfall. I need to finish what I started. I can't let anything, or anyone, stand in my way.

Sorry, Ella James. It looks like you'll need to go missing for a while.

Ella

If I had a dollar for every time I was told covering crime and vice in Las Vegas for the local paper wasn't a job for "a girl like me", I'd have enough money to rent a better apartment. But I want to cover this beat, need to cover it. Besides, it's perfect for "a girl like me."

Parents - killed

Sister - an escort who went missing without a trace

Family - I'm all that's left

When you have nothing to lose, you're willing to do whatever it takes to uncover the truth. Women are being beaten, exploited, going missing or ending up killed. I'll shine a light on all of the dark, murky parts of the criminal underworld. I'm not afraid of anything, or anyone. And that includes you, Beckett Carter.

Let me go, you can't keep me locked up forever.

I won't let you.

Review:
This book was different from anything that I have ever read before. This was something I really liked about it, I had never read a dark romance with the same kind of plot line as this one which I found to be quite unique.  Overall I would give this book 4/5 ⭐'s. I loved the characters and their love story.

Plot:
Ok, as I mentioned above the plot was very different to anything that I have ever read before. I thought the idea of a vigilante type character falling in love with the reporter who could expose him was so cool! I pretty much loved all of the aspects of the plot of this story. It gave you all of the information that you needed on Beckett's backstory so that we understood why he lived his life the way he did. This was the same with Ella, her backstory shaped the way that she lived her life. In a way I feel like these two characters saved each other from their own recklessness and misery. The only thing I would change with the plot would possibly be the way that it ended. I understand why it ended the way it did but due to be obsession with everyone and everything living happily ever after, I would have liked maybe a slightly different ending (I am trying to hard not to just give the ending away here 😅).

Characters:
Beckett
I really liked Beckett's character. I feel like despite his tough exterior he cares a great deal about a number of things. He was able to have a double life as a wealthy business man and a vigilante who was hell bent on destroying the man who killed his parents. Because of what he experienced as a young boy I think he was very closed off and not open to building relationships with other people. This changed when he met Ella (also I think their first meeting was very Fifty Shades of Grey and I'm not mad about it). I think Ella brought out the best in him, despite his treatment of her at first. She taught him how to love another person and essentially taught him the value of his life and what was really important (this I think is beautifully done in the climax of the story. I think he was the perfect match for Ella, they were two broken people who found one another.

Ella
Ella is a very strong woman who is always putting herself in harms way in order to get her story. She is liked this because of a family tragedy that she experienced when she was younger. I think she can understand why Beckett does what he does because in a way she has experienced the same thing that he has. The longer that she is held captive by him, the more of an insight she gets into his life and motivations. I think Ella begins to see it as her job to 'save' Beckett. In the time that she is with him she gets to know him better and eventually falls in love with him. She wants to save him from the destructive path that he is on. I think she does save him in the end from the destructive path that he was on.

Overall Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book. I thought the development of the relationship between Beckett and Ella was really well done. There were very few things I would change about this book. The only down sides for me was I would have liked a slightly different ending (nothing major) and maybe a bit more interaction between the characters in the beginning to build the chemistry a bit more. Overall though this is a great dark romance read.

Favourite Quote:
“What I didn’t know was if two damaged people could ever open up and truly trust each other.”

Until next time, Happy reading
