Book Review: Cock and Bull by Laura Barnard

"Why the hell would they spell it like that? The Irish make no sense."
Blurb:
Who knew that owning a pub would come with so many extras?

When Phoebe and Ella Bellerose left England behind to run the Irish pub they’d inherited, it sounded like a great adventure… until they saw for themselves what a wreck they’d been left.

With no experience, a severe lack of money, and a rival pub owner threatening to ruin them, the two girls aren’t convinced they can actually make this work.

Not until they meet Clooney Breen, who just so happens to be packed with charm, charisma, and barman skills that could help them all survive. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s the son of Cock & Bull’s biggest rival, and he’s desperate to help Ella and Phoebe teach his father a lesson.

But can mysterious Clooney, with his obvious secrets and desire to be their saviour, really be trusted? Or are they being played by this handsome lothario who seems too good to be true? Their problems only seem to grow and grow, until Phoebe discovers a ‘gift’ of her own that changes everything for all of them…

Review:
This book was a very pleasant surprise. I was expecting it to be good but I was not expecting the twists and turns that were thrown into the story. Overall I would rate this book a 4/5 ⭐'s.

Plot:
I think it is safe to say that this book was not at all what I was expecting. Not only was this a romantic comedy but it also had quite a few twists to the story that I would never have guessed. I really liked the overall plot of the story with the two sisters inheriting an old pub in Ireland, where they go to fix it up. All of the mishaps that came from these adventures were genuinely hilarious to read about. Especially with some of the dialogue. One aspect of the book that could have been improved for me would be the ending. I loved the ending that it had (I am a sucker for happily ever after), I just feel like the ending was a bit rushed.

Characters:
Phoebe
I really liked Phoebe as a character. I feel like I relate quite a bit to her personality type. I also found her to be a very funny character yet she was also extremely strong. Despite all of the mishaps with the bar she never gave up. The chemistry between her and Clooney was also off the charts! One of my favourite laugh out loud moments was when Clooney first introduced himself to Phoebe. I feel like this scene just perfectly summed up her character. I thought the twist that the author introduced that related to Phoebe and her great aunt was very unique, but it worked! The adventures that she had because of this twist just made her story all the more funny.

Clooney
I will admit, at first I was not a huge fan of Clooney. I found his character to be quite funny but I also found him to be a bit arrogant. This however began to change the more his character was in the story until eventually I had fallen in love with him. There were still a few characteristics of his that I was not a fan of but overall he was a great character. He had experienced significant hurt in his past which shaped the way he was which made it pretty easy to forgive these misgivings. It was clear that he cared deeply for Phoebe and this was made more evident as the story progressed. Plus I want to give special mention to Chapter 20, read it and thank me later (I mean hot damn, I need me a Clooney).

Ella
I really disliked Ella's character. I feel like this was done somewhat on purpose but honestly I couldn't really think of anything that I liked about her. She was very spoiled and entitled. I think maybe the story could have been better of her character was slightly different. In saying that though. The relationship between Clooney and Phoebe would not have been what it was without Ella acting the way she did. I think this may have been the intent of the author.

Overall thoughts:
Overall, this was a really good romantic comedy. It has twists and turns which kept me interested and always guessing as to where the story was heading. There are very few things I would change which is why I have rated it 4/5 ⭐'s.

Favourite Quote:
For this story, I am choosing the opening line of the book for my favourite quote. I really made me laugh so I thought it was a great way to start the story.

"You've been left your great aunt's Cock and Bull."
This book releases on the 28th of July 2020!
